ISO lists ISO 6002:2021, Industrial valves — Bolted bonnet steel gate valves, as reviewed and confirmed in 2026. That confirmation means the 2021 edition remains current; it does not mean buyers can treat every gate valve carrying the same nominal size and pressure designation as automatically interchangeable.

For replacement procurement, the real question is narrower and more practical: will the offered valve fit the existing piping, meet the actual service conditions, and arrive with enough evidence for engineering approval?

Quick buyer verdict

Do not approve a replacement gate valve from size and pressure class alone. Lock the governing standard edition, face-to-face dimension, end connection, flange details, pressure-temperature basis, materials, operating arrangement, testing, documents, and every supplier deviation before comparing price.

What ISO 6002 covers — and what the RFQ must still define

ISO's public summary says ISO 6002 covers bolted-bonnet steel gate valves with flanged or butt-welding ends across stated size and pressure ranges. It addresses construction features such as bonnet arrangement, stem configuration, obturator type and seating route.

That scope is valuable, but a project RFQ still has to identify the exact configuration needed. “Gate valve to ISO 6002” does not, by itself, tell the supplier the existing face-to-face dimension, flange drilling, service chemistry, required trim, operator orientation, leakage acceptance or document package.

Treat face-to-face as a controlled interface

ASME describes B16.10 as a dimensional standard intended to support installation interchangeability for valves of a given type, size, rating class and end connection. The important procurement lesson is that interchangeability depends on the complete combination — not on size alone.

For an existing installation, request the supplier's certified GA drawing and compare:

  1. Face-to-face or end-to-end dimension.
  2. Flange outside diameter, thickness, drilling and facing.
  3. Centreline-to-handwheel or actuator envelope.
  4. Stem orientation and required maintenance clearance.
  5. Butt-weld end outside diameter, wall schedule and preparation.
  6. Bypass, drain, vent or position-indicator connections.

If the existing valve has no reliable drawing, obtain site measurements and photographs before issuing the final purchase order.

Separate dimensional equivalence from service suitability

A valve can fit the piping and still be unsuitable for the fluid, temperature or operating cycle. Ask the bidder to confirm the pressure-temperature basis and list the actual materials for every pressure-retaining, wetted and sealing component.

For corrosive, sour, high-temperature, low-temperature or solids-bearing service, do not accept a generic statement such as “standard trim.” State the fluid composition, contaminants, operating and upset temperatures, pressure differential, expected cycling and any cleaning or preservation chemicals.

The quotation shall identify the applicable ISO 6002 edition and all project specifications; confirm size, pressure designation, pressure-temperature basis, face-to-face/end-to-end dimension, end-connection details, body and trim materials, operator arrangement, inspection/testing, leakage acceptance and document package; and list every deviation separately. Supplier shall provide a certified GA drawing for dimensional approval before manufacture. No dimensional, material, standard-edition or test substitution applies without written purchaser approval.

Final approval checklist

  1. Confirm the exact standard edition and project precedence.
  2. Match face-to-face, flanges or weld ends to the existing piping.
  3. Verify service conditions against pressure-temperature and material selections.
  4. Check operating clearance, torque and orientation.
  5. Agree inspection, leakage and documentation requirements before production.
  6. Require a single, explicit deviation list.

Closing recommendation

The safest gate valve replacement quote is not simply the one marked “equivalent.” It is the one that proves dimensional fit, service suitability and document completeness against the same buyer-defined basis.
