What Is a SS Ball Valve?

A stainless steel ball valve is a valve that uses a ball-shaped disc to control the flow of water through a pipe. Due to its material, the ball valve is guaranteed durable and corrosion-resistant material. The disc is attached to a lever you can rotate to open or close the valve.

A ball valve made from stainless steel is robust and generally has a long service life. It possesses excellent properties, such as corrosion and abrasion resistance and the ability to handle extreme pressures and temperatures. It can also handle cryogenic applications and those that handle toxic media. Because of its durability, this valve also requires less maintenance.

Stainless steel is the material of choice for applications that could rust or corrode metals. It enhances the longevity and performance of the valve even in the most taxing industries.

Compared to brass valves, stainless steel valves have step-up durability. It’s inherently heat-resistant, tarnish-resistant, and rust-resistant. Aside from that, stainless steel is naturally hygienic, which is the reason why it is used in the medical, pharmaceutical, and food industries.

Stainless Steel Ball Valve: Applications

Since it can handle different types of fluid, the ball valve can be used for almost any industrial application. These include:

  • oil and gas
  • pulp and paper
  • pharmaceuticals
  • water
  • wastewater treatment
  • manufacturing facilities

Stainless Steel Ball Valves: What’s Its Differences From Brass Ball Valves?

Corrosion Resistance: Stainless Steel Ball Valve vs Brass

Brass is a tested-and-tried material due to its durability. It can withstand wear and tear. It has decent corrosion resistance, as well. However, it’s not recommended to be used in highly corrosive environments, such as those with saltwater.

Stainless steel has the same quality. Aside from being extremely corrosion resistant, it is also heat resistant, which improves its performance in high-pressure settings. Moreover, this material doesn’t disintegrate or crack.

High Pressure: Stainless Steel Ball Valve vs Brass

Both stainless steel ball valves and brass ball valves can stand up against high pressure. They are naturally robust, after all, meaning that they can handle high water in various plumbing systems. Reinforcing stainless steel and brass valves could further strengthen their pressure resistance.

Heat and Chemical Resistance: Stainless Steel Ball Valve vs Brass

One of the key differences between stainless steel ball valves and brass valves is lead content. Specifically, no lead is present in high-temperature stainless steel ball valves, making them safer to be used in high-heat applications. When exposed to the elements, stainless steel doesn’t generally release lead residues. On the other hand, brass valves could contain tiny amounts of lead.

How Much Pressure Can a Stainless Steel Ball Valves Handle

Most stainless steel ball valves are constructed from 316 stainless steel. It’s incredibly durable, impervious to rust, and chemically inert. Because of this manufacturing quality, stainless steel ball valves can withstand harsh applications. In fact, most 1000 PSI ball valves are made from stainless steel.
